made me do it |
an unspecific, organically-developing blog my students, both past and present, made me do. |
its a glass-is-half-empty kind of day with a lot of foam, whipped cream, an cherries to compensate. does that make it a glass-is-half-full day? or a glass-is-all-the-way-full day?
despite losing the opportunity to interview what i believe to be a dream candidate for an open position due to ignorance, spite, disorganization, or who-the-f—k-knows (glass is half empty, btw), no fewer than 5 of our kids did something or said something to add the foam, whipped cream, and cherries to make the glass full. a sonnet republished in the blogosphere (even though i lost my mention in the reblog)… a research paper realized… the friggin’ amazing lightbulb moment that happened to my boy somewhere on Gallatin near where it hits 16th. good thing, too, cuz my explaining wasn’t going anywhere and i was getting blue in the face. a hug from a young man who rarely acknowledges my existence. if you’re not in school regularly, you’d be surprised at how often people don’t say hi to one another as they pass each other despite having been in the same classroom for a year or more.
its RARELY the kids who steal the cherries, steal the whipped cream, or deflate thhe foam, though. its almost invariably the adults.
Taahira: I love the sonnet and I’m so proud you didnt give up.
Calvin: You are putting your academics first, getting things done, and thinking HARD! I’m so proud of your determination to finish your hs career on fire!
Adam: I finally posted a song that warranted a positive response! ;) You made me smile!
Melanie: I *love* that you can just throw out authors’ names in a text like you did Chinua Achebe… you just don’t know how happy that makes me.
Tee: i love watching you navigate this world feeling like an outsider. you will find your place where you can be you… or not but it will be up to you! we still need to do grilled cheese.
…you all have helped me see that the glass is filled to the top and f**k everyone else cuz life’s too short, precious, and good.
